AADLC Activists Rally for Kerry at Virginia Primary Victory Celebration

Fairfax, VA -- Virginia Armenians supporting Senator Kerry’s bid for the Democratic Presidential nomination cheered the Senator to victory on Tuesday, as he added the Commonwealth and Tennessee to the string of decisive wins in state primaries and caucases across the country, reported the Armenian American Democratic Leadership Council (AADLC.)

Kerry for President campaign volunteers and AADLC activists Tsoghig Margossian and Jeff Marootian were on stage with the Senator at George Mason University as he thanked his supporters and discussed his plans to unseat Pres. Bush in the November elections. Following the event, Marootian explained that, "over the past 20 years, Sen. Kerry has been consistently supportive of Armenian American concerns from Armenian Genocide recognition to providing aid to Armenia. I am particularly proud to volunteer with the campaign and stand with him this evening as he moves closer to clinching the Democratic nomination.” Marootian and Margossian were among a group of Senator Kerry supporters, working with campaign outreach staffer Marwan Burgan, phone-banking and canvassing for the Senator in the days leading up to the primary.

Virginia democrats were active in Richmond, northern Virginia and throughout the state in support of the presidential hopefuls. Their efforts built on campaign activism, which began with the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire primary. In the days leading up to New Hampshire, the AADLC sent mailers to more than two thousand New Hampshire Armenian American households outlining the views of the Democratic candidates on the Armenian Genocide.

Each of the major Democratic Presidential hopefuls – Sen. Kerry, Sen. Edwards, and Gov. Dean – have spoken out on Armenian American concerns, specifically citing their support for the proper U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Senators Kerry and Edwards were among the earliest cosponsors of Genocide legislation (S.Res.164) which commemorates U.S. ratification of the Genocide Convention. In a statement released last week, Gov. Dean reminded Armenian Americans of President Bush's broken pledge to recognize the Genocide, stating that "the President is wrong to abandon his pledge to Armenian Americans. I call upon the Congress to pass the Genocide Resolution."
