GEPHARDT, BONIOR LEAD EFFORT TO SCHEDULE IMMEDIATE FLOOR VOTE ON GENOCIDE RESOLUTION

Democratic Leader Gephardt Joins with Ranking Democrat on the International Relations Committee Sam Gejdenson and Armenian Caucus Co-Chairman Frank Pallone in Voicing Disappointment Over Speaker's Long Delays in Bringing H.Res.398 to a Vote

"Armenian American communities throughout our nation have waited long enough for Congress to recognize the horrible genocide endured by many of their predecessors early in this century. We therefore implore you to avoid further delay or the possible derailment of this legislation"

Falls Church, VA: Democratic Congressional candidate Adam Schiff announced today that the Democratic Leader of the U.S. House, Dick Gephardt (D-MO), has called on Speaker Hastert to schedule an immediate vote of the full House on the Armenian Genocide resolution (H.Res.398).

State Senator Schiff, who is running for the U.S. House in California's 27th Congressional District, has worked closely with the Democratic leadership to support the passage of H.Res.398. Earlier today, Rep. Gephardt was joined by the Ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee Sam Gejdenson (D-CT) and Armenian Caucus Co-Chairman Frank Pallone in writing to Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) to urge him to schedule the Armenian Genocide Resolution for "immediate floor consideration." In their letter, they noted the Speaker's "recent new-found interest" in this legislation and pointed out that, "this issue requires little if any additional deliberation by the House of Representatives."

On September 7th, Democratic Whip David Bonior (D-MI) had written a strongly-worded letter to the Speaker noting that, "unfortunately...it is my understanding that several members of the majority leadership have been attempting to block its consideration."

"Armenian Americans appreciate Senator Schiff's initiative in reaching out to his future Democratic colleagues and helping to rally the energetic support of House Democratic leaders Gephardt, Bonior, Gejdenson, and Pallone for immediate floor action on H.Res.398," said AADLC Executive Director Raffi Asatoorian.
