AADLC WELCOMES ADAM SCHIFF'S ENTRY INTO CONGRESSIONAL RACE

LOS ANGELES, CA: The Armenian American Democratic Leadership Council (AADLC) has welcomed California State Senator Adam Schiff's entry into the race to represent the 27th Congressional District. In a statement released today, the AADLC cited Schiff's initiative, hard work, and track record of success on issues of concern to Armenian American voters in his district.

"Senator Schiff stands out as an exceptionally forceful and effective advocate within the California legislature on issues of concern to Armenian Americans," said Alex Sardar, AADLC Executive Director. "Adam Schiff's work on behalf of his Armenian American constituents is unrivaled in the State Senate, as illustrated most recently by his leadership in securing state funding for a documentary film on the Armenian Genocide."

Through Senator Schiff's leadership, the California State Budget for 1999-2000 includes over $450,000 to fund the completion of The Witnesses, a feature-length, three-part documentary on the Armenian Genocide. This funding measure, having been guided by the Senator through both the California Senate and Assembly, is currently on the desk of Governor Gray Davis. As long as the Governor does not exercise a line-item veto of this funding, the measure will become law and the film will be on track to be completed in the year 2000, the 85th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Senator Schiff has long been a close friend and supporter of the Armenian American community. His district, which includes the cities of Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank and portions of Los Angeles, boasts one of the most Armenian populated regions in the United States. Last year he spearheaded a successful initiative in response to efforts by the Turkish government to manipulate the University of California's teachings on the Armenian Genocide. The law enacted as a result of his efforts imposes strict state scrutiny over foreign funding of state colleges and universities. Senator Schiff is currently helping ongoing efforts to secure funding for the expansion of the Glendale Homenetmen Ararat chapter's youth and athletic center.
