AADLC CALLS ON VICE PRESIDENT TO REJECT TURKISH DENIAL OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
AADLC Reminds him of 1990 Vote in the Senate for Genocide Bill
|
Falls Church, VA: The Armenian American Democratic Leadership Council (AADLC) has called upon Vice President Al Gore to reaffirm his past support for the appropriate commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. The request, made personally to the Vice-President by AADLC Executive Director Alex Sardar at a recent Democratic National Committee conference in Washington, DC, was communicated again to him in a letter sent on March 23, 1999.
"As a Senator, it is well known among Americans of Armenian heritage, that in 1990 Al Gore voted for the Armenian Genocide resolution," commented AADLC Executive Director Alex Sardar after forwarding AADLC's letter to the Vice-President. "Since his election as Vice-President, he has backed away from this principled position, refusing even to use the word 'genocide' in his letters to his strongest Armenian American supporters."
"We call upon the Vice-President to stand up for the truth, affirm the historical record of the Armenian Genocide, and bring an end to the safe haven that the White House has provided for the Turkish government's shameful campaign of denial," added Sardar. (A copy of the AADLC letter to the Vice President is attached.)
Former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley, the only other announced Democratic presidential candidate, voted in 1990 for the Armenian Genocide resolution and has supported a broad range of Armenian American issues.
Concerned Democrats can contact the office of the Vice President's foreign policy advisor, Leon Fuerth, by calling (202) 456-9501.
