AADLC PARTICIPATES IN WHITE HOUSE PREVIEW OF CLINTON'S STATE OF THE UNION SPEECH

Communication Director Ann Lewis Outlines Presidential Address

Falls Churc, VA: At the invitation of the White House, a delegation from the Armenian American Democratic Leadership Council (AADLC) attended a January 19th preview of the key domestic and international issues which were addressed later that day in President Bill Clinton's State of the Union address.

Among the senior Administration officials taking part in the talks were Ann Lewis, the White House's Director of Communications; Maria Echaveste, the President's Deputy Chief of Staff; Robert Johnson, who serves as Deputy Director of the Office of Public Liaison and; Chris Jennings, the President's advisor on health care issues.

"In our discussions with the President's senior advisors, on the eve of his State of Union speech, we shared our community's concerns across a range of domestic and foreign policy areas," said AADLC Executive Director Alex Sardar. "We look forward to further strengthening our cooperation with the White House in advancing its progressive domestic agenda, and to expanding our efforts to make sure that the views of Armenian Americans are taken fully into account in the formulation of our nation's international agenda."

During the briefing, Communications Director Ann Lewis said that the President's speech would focus on "doing the people's business," and then previewed the President's address. Deputy Chief of Staff Maria Echaveste went into more detail, outlining the President's ambitious domestic agenda for the next two years. In particular, she emphasized the importance of saving Social Security and decreasing student-teacher ratios in America's classrooms.

Joining AADLC representatives at the briefing were representatives from several other ethnic organizations, health care advocates, faith-based groups, senior citizens leaders, and other key constituencies.

The AADLC works with the Democratic National Committee to foster support within the Armenian American community for the Democratic Party and national Democratic office holders, while promoting the election of Armenian American Democrats to political office and encouraging participation by Armenian American Democrats at all levels of the public policy process. Individuals interested in learning more about AADLC are encouraged to contact Alex Sardar at AADLC98@aol.com.
