AADLC OPPOSES IMPEACHMENT VOTE
Calls on Representatives to Adopt Bipartisan Compromise Measure
|
Falls Church, VA: The Armenian American Democratic Leadership Council (AADLC) has called on members of the House of Representatives to oppose the impeachment of President Bill Clinton and to instead consider other means, including a resolution of censure, to address the improper conduct which the President has acknowledged to Congress and the American people.
"The accusations brought against the President simply do not reach the standard of impeachable offenses," said AADLC Executive Director Alex Sardar. "The Congress, acting on a bipartisan basis, should consider other remedies short of impeachment - in the spirit of the compromise proposal offered by former Senate majority leader Bob Dole in his December 15th opinion column in the New York Times."
"We remain troubled that the partisan nature of the Republican leadership's drive to impeach the President, in effect overturning the 1992 and 1996 presidential elections, will set a dangerous precedent which may have long-term negative implications for the constitutional balance of powers."
The AADLC was established in late 1996 to work with the Democratic National Committee to foster support within the Armenian American community for the Democratic Party and national Democratic office holders. The AADLC promotes the election of Armenian American Democrats to political office and encourages participation by Armenian American Democrats at all levels of the public policy process.
