Dear Friend:
To understand why the AADLC is so effective at mobilizing Armenian Democrats, energizing Armenian Independents, and even winning over Armenian Republicans, just take a look at the numbers.
- Today - as you read this letter - more than 80% of the U.S. Senate cosponsors of the Genocide Resolution (S.Res.164) are Democrats (29 of 35). On the House side, 75% of the cosponsors are Democrats (83 of 111).
- In June of 1999, when the U.S. Senate voted to save Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, 75% of the Democrats voted with our community, as opposed to only 34% of the Republicans.
- In September of 1998, when the U.S. House voted to help lift the Azerbaijani blockade by preserving Section 907, 74% of Democrats supported the Armenian American community, while 60% of the Republicans voted against the Armenian American position.
- In June of 1996, when the U.S. House voted to reduce U.S. aid to Turkey until it ended its campaign to deny the Armenian Genocide, over two thirds (68%) of the Democrats stood with the Armenian American community. In contrast, over 60% of those opposing this measure were Republicans.
- In June of 1995, when the U.S. House voted to cut aid to Turkey because of its blockade of Armenia, 60% of the Democrats stood with the Armenian American community, while 77% of the Republicans voted to turn a blind eye to Turkey's violation of international law.
The numbers don't lie. Time and time again Democrats in Congress have taken the lead in advancing the Armenian Cause. Whether it's Representatives Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) spearheading efforts to reaffirm official U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide or Senators Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) advancing a pro-Armenian agenda in the U.S. Senate, it has been Democrats who have stood tall in defense of the Armenian Cause so dear to a million and a half Armenian-Americans.
This is why the AADLC works with the Democratic Party to foster support within the Armenian American community for the Democratic Party and national Democratic office holders, while promoting the election of Armenian American Democrats to political office and encouraging even greater participation by Armenian American Democrats at all levels of the public policy process.
So thank you for visiting our website. Please look through our site and then email us to join our effort to promote the ideals of both the Democratic Party and the Armenian Cause. Together, we can win victories in 2004 and beyond.
Sincerely,
Tsoghig Margosian
AADLC
